New Ideas Guide New Journey: Accelerating the Building of a Beautiful China Where Humanity and Nature Coexist in Harmony

Today (June 5) marks June 5th Environment Day, with the theme "Beautiful China, I Act First." Building a beautiful China is a matter of paramount importance that General Secretary Xi Jinping consistently emphasizes. He stresses the need to firmly establish and practice the concept that lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets, and to place the construction of a beautiful China in a prominent position in building a strong nation and achieving national rejuvenation. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping's thought on ecological civilization, building a beautiful China is increasingly becoming a conscious action of all people, jointly writing a new chapter of Chinese-style modernization where humanity and nature coexist in harmony. Today, green has become the distinct background color of a beautiful China. This year, the Babusha Forest Farm in Gansu will afforest 20,000 mu, and the Yellow River water, transported from over a hundred kilometers away, is irrigating new green hopes. In Beijing on a summer night, green electricity from Xinjiang spans 3,000 kilometers to "light up" the city. Currently, green electricity accounts for nearly 30% of Beijing's total electricity consumption. Where ecology thrives, civilization thrives. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has regarded ecological civilization construction as a fundamental project for the sustainable development of the Chinese nation. From north to south, inside and outside the Great Wall, from urban green spaces to rural fields, through numerous grassroots inspections and important meetings, the General Secretary, standing at the height of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature, has steered the fundamental project of sustainable development for the Chinese nation, leading significant strides in building a beautiful China. He pointed out that the concept of green development must be integrated into all aspects of ecological protection, environmental construction, production and manufacturing, urban development, and people's lives, to accelerate the construction of a beautiful China. Following the direction guided by the General Secretary, various regions and departments have unswervingly followed the path of ecological priority and green development, continuously achieving new results in building a beautiful China. The "2024 China Ecological Environment Status Bulletin" released today shows that in 2024, the average concentration of PM2.5 in cities at or above prefecture-level was 29.3 micrograms/cubic meter, making China the country with the fastest improvement in air quality globally; the proportion of excellent surface water quality sections nationwide exceeded 90% for the first time, with the main streams of the Yangtze River maintaining Class II water quality for 5 consecutive years and the Yellow River for 3 consecutive years; as the country with the largest increase in forest resources globally, China's forest coverage rate exceeds 25%, and its "green assets" continue to grow. New steps have been taken in building a beautiful China. This year, documents such as "Beautiful China Pilot Zones," "Beautiful Cities," and "Beautiful Villages" have been introduced, and the construction of beautiful rivers, lakes, and bays has been deeply implemented, continuously improving the implementation system for building a beautiful China. All over the country, a series of landmark battles are being fought with higher standards, striving to basically eliminate prominent problems that citizens strongly complain about, such as severe pollution weather and black and odorous water bodies, and to resolve "at-home" environmental issues such as noise and oil fumes, continuously meeting people's new expectations for a high-quality ecological environment. The quality of ecosystems has steadily improved. In the Zhouzhi National Nature Reserve in Shaanxi, 36 golden monkey babies have been born this year, bringing the current number of Qinling golden monkeys to over 6,000. Since the establishment of the nature reserve system with national parks as the main body, ecological corridors have been connected, and natural reserves have been integrated, leading to continuous growth in the wild populations of flagship species such as giant pandas and snow leopards. The green background of high-quality development has become more distinct. China's first "sandy-arid-desert" photovoltaic experimental base has been put into use in Inner Mongolia, with over 150 photovoltaic experimental schemes supporting the acceleration of new energy construction. The national carbon market is steadily expanding its industry coverage, promoting the steady implementation of the "dual carbon" goals. Green sorting centers will exceed 1,000 this year, gradually improving the waste material recycling network, using the "green content" of development to enhance the "gold content" of the economy. Green lifestyles are becoming a new social trend. Green travel, old-for-new trade-ins, and waste sorting are integrated into daily life, and 35 million people have joined the ranks of ecological environment volunteers, jointly pushing the goal of a beautiful China to become a reality step by step.

It is imperative to earnestly study and implement the important instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping, implement the decisions and arrangements of the Party Central Committee and the State Council, and ensure the realization of the goal of a "safe college entrance examination." The reform of the examination and enrollment system and the organization and implementation of the college entrance examination must always bear in mind the mission of educating talent for the Party and selecting talent for the country, and safeguard the "lifeline" of fairness and justice. Shanxi is one of the fifth batch of provinces to implement comprehensive reform of the college entrance examination, and it must meticulously carry out examination services and comprehensive support work, strengthen full-process supervision of examination papers, severely crack down on examination cheating, strictly enforce admissions discipline, and strive to ensure the safe, stable, and smooth conduct of the college entrance examination. Ding Xuexiang visited Shanxi University of Applied Science and Technology to investigate the development of private colleges and universities. He stated that both public and private universities are universities run by the Party. Party leadership must be fully integrated into the school governance system, ideological and political guidance must be strengthened, the requirements and standards for ideological and political courses must be unified, and the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education must be put into practice. While cultivating highly skilled personnel, attention should also be paid to cultivating various talents needed for economic and social development. Policies and measures to increase employment assistance should be implemented to promote high-quality and full employment of college graduates. Ding Xuexiang visited State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Company to investigate the comprehensive reform pilot program for energy revolution. He pointed out that Shanxi is a major energy province and should take the lead in promoting the clean and efficient utilization of coal, improve policies and measures for new energy consumption and regulation, and accelerate the construction of a new energy system. He also emphasized strengthening energy supply during the peak summer period, scientifically carrying out power dispatching management, and ensuring the safe and stable power supply for people's livelihoods and important users. At the Taoyuan National Controlled Environmental Air Automatic Monitoring Point, Ding Xuexiang learned about the comprehensive management of air pollution. He emphasized the need to optimize and adjust the industrial structure, energy structure, and transportation structure to fundamentally solve environmental pollution problems. He also stressed enhancing scientific and precise pollution control capabilities, rectifying "scattered, chaotic, and polluting" enterprises in accordance with the law, and continuously improving air quality. Ecological environment monitoring data must be true and accurate to provide scientific basis for evaluating and improving policies and to support winning the blue sky, clear water, and clean land defense battles.

24 Solar Terms: Mangzhong (Grain in Ear)

Mangzhong, or "Grain in Ear," is the ninth of the twenty-four solar terms and the third solar term of summer. At the end of the program, we delve into the vast land of China to appreciate the harvest scenes and folk customs during the Mangzhong season. The "Mang" in Mangzhong refers to crops with awns, such as wheat; "zhong" means sowing. Around Mangzhong, wheat is harvested, and crops like rice and corn are sown, making it a busy time for farming. By Mangzhong, temperatures rise significantly, and rainfall is abundant, making it the most vigorous growing season of the year for all things. Plums ripen in Jiangnan, and lychees turn red in Lingnan. Ancient people emphasized "eating with the seasons," perceiving the cycle of the four seasons through their taste buds. During Mangzhong, various regions also have customs such as sending off the Flower God and "An Miao" (praying for seedlings), one being a graceful farewell and the other a simple hope, both reflecting the ecological wisdom of revering nature and coexisting in harmony. Mangzhong, with both harvest and planting, is our most poetic response to the rhythms of heaven and earth.
