Xi's Remarks on Tree Planting Resonate, Call for Building Beautiful China

Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized during his participation in a voluntary tree-planting activity in the capital that afforestation is a crucial part of ecological civilization construction. He urged all regions and departments to take further action, mobilize and organize the vast number of cadres and the public to actively participate in afforestation and greening efforts, and gather immense strength to jointly build a beautiful China. The General Secretary's important speech has resonated warmly across the country. Everyone expressed their determination to practice the concept of green development, promote ecological culture, and make the motherland more lush and vibrant. On April 3, General Secretary Xi Jinping visited the Yongding River bank in Beijing's Fengtai District to participate in voluntary tree-planting with cadres and the public. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping has participated in voluntary tree-planting activities in the capital for 13 consecutive years. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, China's ecological environmental protection has undergone historic, transformative, and comprehensive changes. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that China's forest coverage rate has exceeded 25%, contributing about 25% of the global newly added green area. Through continuous efforts, the Taklimakan Desert has put on a "green scarf," and the Horqin Sandy Land is regaining its grassland scenery, achievements that have not come easily. The General Secretary's important speech has inspired the vast number of cadres and the public to actively engage in afforestation and greening to build a beautiful China. General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed that to green the motherland, it is essential to simultaneously implement "three greens" – expanding green, vitalizing green, and protecting green – and promote the coordinated development of "four reservoirs" – forest as a water reservoir, a money reservoir, a grain reservoir, and a carbon reservoir – pointing the direction for scientifically advancing land greening and building a beautiful China. More green means more advantages; planting trees means planting the future. Cadres and the public expressed their resolve to follow the direction guided by General Secretary Xi Jinping, actively participate in afforestation and greening, and work together to paint a new beautiful China.

News Feature: Loyalty Defined by Life

In times of peace, the public security force is a contingent that makes the most sacrifices and dedicates the most. In 2024, a total of 208 police officers and 174 auxiliary police officers across the country's public security agencies died in the line of duty. They forged the police spirit with their blood and wrote loyalty with their lives. During the Qingming Festival, as we commemorate martyrs, today (April 4), we look at the deeds of two police officers who sacrificed their lives last year. Qiu Jianjun, formerly the deputy director of Hanxing Police Station, Jianghan District Branch of Wuhan Public Security Bureau, Hubei Province. In the early morning of June 1, 2024, he received a report of a person with a knife wounding others and immediately led a team to pursue the suspect to the rented house where he was hiding. The suspect, holding a sharp blade about 60 cm long, violently resisted arrest. In that life-or-death moment, Qiu Jianjun stepped forward and shielded his colleagues. In the small rented house, fearing injury to his comrades and the suspect's mother, Qiu Jianjun chose not to open fire. In a desperate struggle with the irrational suspect, Qiu Jianjun was seriously wounded and heroically sacrificed his life after rescue efforts at the hospital failed. In his 30 years of policing, Qiu Jianjun participated in solving over 1,800 criminal cases, including more than 200 major cases such as intentional homicide and robbery. His firm belief in protecting the public had long become his instinct. The Hanxing Police Station, where Qiu Jianjun worked, established the Qiu Jianjun Vanguard Team, and all young police officers have joined the team to continue the struggle. After his sacrifice, Qiu Jianjun was recognized as a martyr and posthumously awarded the title of "First-Class Hero Model of the National Public Security System." Recently, a ceremony to announce Qiu Jianjun's advanced deeds was held in Wuhan. Xu Yunruo, formerly a first-level police chief at the Urban Squad of the Traffic Police Detachment, Wuzhong District Branch of Suzhou Public Security Bureau, Jiangsu Province. On November 5, 2024, at an intersection in Changqiao Street, Suzhou, he was hit and knocked down by a driver who refused to cooperate with law enforcement, suffering serious injuries. He unfortunately died in the line of duty after rescue efforts failed, at the age of 55. In his 32 years as a traffic police officer, over 10,000 days of morning and evening rush hours, and countless sleepless nights of law enforcement until the early hours, he faithfully fulfilled his duties, silently safeguarding the safety of public travel. At the intersection of a two-way four-lane road in his jurisdiction, there is a century-old stone bridge, Xinjia Bridge, which was where Xu Yunruo spent the longest time on duty. Every morning at 7:30, he would be on duty on the road, diligently doing the same things every day. In September 2024, when Typhoon "Bebinca" swept through Suzhou city, Xu Yunruo volunteered to go to the most severely affected area. In the torrential rain, the over 50-year-old Xu Yunruo did not hesitate to jump into the accumulated water to direct traffic, standing for 12 hours.
